While recording my first record, Now Is the Last Best Time, I discovered Gavin Bryars and his album The Sinking of the Titanic. It became the touchstone of the recording and creative process for NITLBT. It was an exquisite example of handling an emotional topic with respect and grace.

During my obsession with the record, I taught myself how to play the main theme or hymn, Autumn, and I would frequently end solo ambient sets performing this work.

I recorded the guitar for this in the winter of 2017 while on tour in Detroit with Hedwig. Periodically I would open the session and tinker with the soundscape and pick apart my performance. For a long time I felt I didn't play it well enough and would need to re-record it but over time I've come to find the beauty in this performance. The idiosyncrasies and shortcomings of the way I play guitar are laid bare in this as there is only one guitar ringing out in the darkness of this tune.

Bryar's album meant so much to me for so long that I wanted to make sure this tribute had its moment in the spotlight.
